Academic
Information
The Advanced Academy is administratively housed in the
University's Honors College, and Academy students
are automatically qualified for and encouraged
to enroll in Honors courses. Benefits of the Honors
College include:
- smaller
classes taught seminar style
- specialized
instruction
- exceptional
undergraduate research opportunities
- mentoring
relationships with faculty
- another
peer group of academically-oriented students
- leadership
opportunities with the Honors Council
How Credit
Transfers Between the Academy and High Schools
The coursework Academy students complete at the University of West
Georgia serves to complete high school graduation requirements.
Classes are taken exclusively at the college level, and the high
school diploma is issued by the high school.
Academy students
must meet graduation requirements established by the Georgia
Board of Education and their own local Boards of Education.
This means that Academy students must complete the same number
of English, science, mathematics, social science, foreign language,
physical education and health, and elective credits (Carnegie
Units) as their counterparts in high school. Academy staff members
maintain close contact with students' home high schools to ensure
that requirements are met. University
semester credit hours are converted to Carnegie Units in a 5
to 1 ratio: five semester hours equal one Carnegie Unit.

| Junior English |
English
Composition: ENGL 1101 AND ENGL 1102 |
|
| Senior English
|
One
semester of American Literature:
ENGL 2130
One semester
of British Literature:
ENGL 2120
With permission
of the sending school system, World Literature, ENGL 2110,
or any other higher level English course, could be substituted
for one of the above. |
A
student missing only Senior English would be required
to take the English Composition sequence ENGL 1101 and
1102. If a student has a 610 or better SATV score,
he/she may skip ENGL 1101/1102 and move on to an Honors
American, British, and/or World Literature. Once
the student has completed an Honors Literature course
with a “B” or better, he/she may be eligible
to enroll in virtually any upper level English course
at UWG. |

Given
the varying proficiencies in mathematics of many of the
Academy students, it is possible that a student missing
Algebra II would test into placement higher than College
Algebra. Such a student would still be required
to complete enough course work above College Algebra in
order to meet high school graduation requirements. |
| Geometry
|
With
permission of the sending high school, the requirement
of a second unit of math would also be met with the courses
listed above. |
For
each Carnegie Unit a student has remaining in high school,
the student would take a minimum of 5 semester hours of
math at UWG. Courses actually taken will depend
on student’s proficiencies, remaining high school
requirements, and career aspirations. |
