Benefits
of the Academy
Perhaps you
wonder, "Why choose the Academy over other early-entrance-to-college
programs?" We think there are many solid reasons why the Academy
is an excellent and logical first choice:
- The depth
of our program. The University of West Georgia is a four-year
institution offering 57 degree programs, and we are able to place
students in classes according to their levels of ability and preparation.
For example, some students have begun their math sequences with
Calculus III, a University junior-level course, or beyond.
- The breadth
of our program. Our students come from Georgia and beyond, including
other countries, and they are interested in a wide range of topics
from science to computer technology, to business, to English,
and to music and theater. Their varied backgrounds and interests
enrich all aspects of the program.
- The Academy
has been awarded several grants that allow us to offer both need-
and merit-based scholarships to qualifying applicants. The organizations
and individuals who have contributed these funds are convinced
of the efficacy of this program and of the quality and success
of our students.
- The Board
of Regents awarded The University of West Georgia the only
Honors College in the State of Georgia because of the success
of its Honors Program. The Advanced Academy is part of the Honors
College, and this affiliation allows Academy students to take
Honors classes, which are limited in size and provide an optimal
learning and academic mentoring environment, as well as another
peer group of highly academically oriented students.
- A hallmark
of both West Georgia and the Advanced Academy is our emphasis
on undergraduate research. Five of the last seven years West Georgia
had more student research proposals accepted for presentation
to the annual National Collegiate Honors Council Conference (a
highly competitive process) than any other institution in the
country! Many of the West Georgia students attending and presenting
at this conference were Academy students.
- The Advanced
Academy's residence hall has won many local and state-wide awards
for its excellent staff and programming.
-
The opportunity to live and learn in a community of intelectual
peers, often for the first time.
