Be a full-time college student in 11th grade!

The Advanced Academy of Georgia is an early entrance to college program at the University of West Georgia for high ability high school-aged students who are interested in accelerating their academic careers. One of only a few programs in the state that offers students the opportunity to earn concurrent high school and college credit while fully immersed in the university, The Academy provides a supportive environment among like-minded peers who value academic achievement. Many of our students go on to pursue advanced degrees in medicine, law, engineering or liberal arts and work in our company now as advanced writers.

Mission

The Advanced Academy of Georgia is a residential, early entrance to college program for gifted and talented high school-aged students. Our mission is to provide an enriched, residential, early entrance to college program for carefully selected, bright, and motivated high school students who are interested in accelerating their academic careers. The Academy seeks to provide opportunities for educational advancement in an environment that supports students in developing the skills that will help to ensure their success, both in the Academy and as future leaders.

Students generally apply during their sophomore or junior year, but we also occasionally accept younger, high ability students. We are located on the campus of the University of West Georgia– a comprehensive doctoral institution with over one hundred programs of study, including the University’s 2-2 Regent’s Engineering Transfer Program with the Georgia Institute of Technology.

The Advanced Academy of Georgia is one of only a few programs in the United States that provide the opportunity to earn concurrent high school and college credit in a full-time residential program. The Academy is NOT a high school. Our students exclusively take regularly scheduled university classes taught by university professors for which they receive high school and university credit.

We explore and develop the unique gifts of each individual mind, heart, body, and spirit, offering an unparalleled opportunity for individuals to achieve their dreams. At the Advanced Academy, academic opportunities are virtually unlimited. Whether the dream is to become an astronaut, chemical engineer, software designer, medical professional, author, musician, or professor, we have a program for you!

FAQ

Who is eligible to be an Academy student?

Do you ever accept students younger than 11th grade?

Yes! While traditionally dual enrolled and Advanced Academy students have been in 11th and 12th grades, the new MOWR program provides for students in grades 9-12 to attend. We will accept students in grades 9-12 who apply and meet our entrance requirements.

How is an admissions decision made?

Students should apply to UWG as dual enrollment students. All applicants who are accepted and meet the Advanced Academy’s entrance requirements will be invited to join the Advanced Academy.

Current UWG Dual Enrollment students who meet the Academy’s academic standards will also be invited to join the Academy.

How much harder are academics at the Academy?

College is inherently more advanced than high school, but the degree of difference in difficulty depends on the student’s study habits, abilities, preparation, and motivation, as well as the area of study.

Can I attend another college or university after the Academy?

Yes. You can apply to any institution of your choice after your time as an Academy student. The credits you earn while in the Academy will transfer to almost all in-state public institutions and to several out-of-state or private institutions. It is best to check with the school you desire to attend for full details regarding credit transfer. You may choose to apply as a freshman or as a transfer student to other institutions.
